• The film makes various literary references: T.S. Eliot (The Hollow Men), Philip K. Dick (Flow my Tears the Policeman Said) and Robert Frost (Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening).
• The Doomsday Scenario Interface in the beginning of the movie resembles the TV interface in ‘Paul Verhoeven (I)’ (qv)’s _Starship Troopers (1997)_ (qv). Verhoeven’s next film after “Troopers” was to be _Hollow Man (2000)_ (qv), a title pretty close to T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Hollow Men”, from where ‘Justin Timberlake’ (qv)’s lines “This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the worlds end. Not with a whimper, but with a bang” were taken.
• When the Prime Minister of Japan got his hand chopped off, he claims that it only should be the finger. Baron von Westphalen answers that he had probably missed the 6 inch deviation clause in his contract. The German dubbing of the movie obviously got confused about the US customary units and translated 6 inches with 1.80 meters, which is actually 6 feet.
• Writer/director, ‘Richard Kelly (II)’ (qv) said that the film is going to be a “strange hybrid” of the sensibilities of ‘Andy Warhol’ (qv) and ‘Philip K. Dick’ (qv).
• SPOILER: ‘Christopher Lambert (I)’ (qv) is once again in a plot about a futuristic corporation that devises a planetary energy shield, with undesirable side-effects. The first; _Highlander II: The Quickening (1991)_ (qv).
